The prison cell was not all that big. Everett decided to sit on the floor on the far left side of the cell. Eddie Stone was walking near him as Everett looks up at him.
[Everett]: “You know, for a guy who turns blue and can’t keep himself hidden from the world, you sure do have a more positive attitude than I do. I don’t know how you are taking this stuff so chilled out.”
[Eddie]: “I’ve been in their shoes, so I know how this system works…”
Eddie leans back into the corner, facing out and looking over to Everett.
[Eddie]: “My unit was...this sounds so corny, but for real, black ops. We really did that Metal Gear Solid type crap. Including black sites like this. Places that don’t exist to anyone who isn’t already here. Extractions, guarding, even interrogations...”
Everett shook his head.
[Everett]: “No Eddie, I mean….You, you as a person. The way you’ve been going about all of this. I mean, I feel like i’m the only one who probably more fearful than the rest. When those cops had me outside the bar, I honestly thought that it was going to be the end for me. I know that we are still strangers to each other, but as crazy as it seems, I feel like you guys are all that I have right now. I can’t go back home, I don’t want to die, I feel like I have no choice but to do what I can in order to survive.”
Everett looks over at Eddie.
[Everett]: “You really wouldn’t have cared if they killed you out there, that armed trooper with the magnum gun.”
Eddie slumps down into a sitting position, and shrugs.
[Eddie]: “Nope.”
He nervously laughs, looking down at his hands.
[Eddie]: “I can try to tell you it was some kind of awesome psychological play, that I wanted to get information from him. And I DID. But the truth is, I really don’t care if I live or die, and I haven’t for a long time.”
Beginning to feel withdrawal from nicotine, Eddie seems tired when he lifts his heavy eyes to Everett.
[Eddie]: “I knew only two things; keep my team alive, and accomplish the mission. I was willing to die for either of those two things and I proved it every day. After our unit disbanded, everyone went their separate ways. I had nobody on my team, and I had no mission to accomplish. I guess now, I do. You guys in here with me are my team, and the mission is to get the hell out of here. If that meant I had to get my head blown off, so be it.”
Closing his eyes while leaning up against the wall. Everett was turning into an emotional wreck. He opens his eyes back up as he looks over at Eddie with a form of compassion.
[Everett]: “I didn’t ask for any of this to happen...I didn’t ask to become a mutant. I….”
He sighs deeply while shaking his head.
[Everett]: “When that news story broke out over mutation being something that actually exist? I thought it was pretty cool. Knowing that mutant life is among us, when the stories broke out, I was amazed at what I heard people talking about. Then, as time went on, I heard the news about how a lot of people were changing with mutation because of some type of substance that got put into their body. I’ve gotten plenty of shots growing up from the doctors as a kid. I never would have thought that I would become a mutant. I didn’t think anything was wrong with me until I had reached a certain age. My parents and my family has no idea where I am now. I didn’t want to hurt the people that I love, so I ran off. I been on the streets for months now. I’ve been stealing in order to survive. I don’t know how I can go on now, maybe enslavement is the best thing for me. Heh, black guy going back to slavery, who would have thought?”
Everett chuckles, the first time he’s smiled in a long time. Eddie gets a little bit of a laugh in as well.
[Eddie]: “Nah, f*ck that. The only one who can make you a slave is you. They’re controlling us because we’re letting them. That’s why they didn’t shoot me. That’s why they didn’t kill the kid that rushed him. They need us alive. They fear us. Everett, they know we’ve got something they don’t and they want it for themselves. I didn’t want this either. This kind of sucks, to be honest. But I can’t do anything about it, and neither can you. We just have to use these powers for the right reasons. We’ve all got the gift, and we can’t waste it being their pawns.”
[Everett]: “I think you concern some of us Eddie. Perhaps they feel like you might be a little reckless with how you act. I think you are just misunderstood. Everybody is trying to walk around on egg shells.”
Looking down at the floor for a second, he looks back over at Eddie.
[Everett]: “I don’t know if they even have a cure or if they will ever come up with a cure on how to change any of us back, but if I don’t get myself together, i’ll be dead before I can live long enough to be cured. I think you are kinda crazy Eddie, but I dig it.”
Everett laughs lightly.
[Everett]: “You seem to know what you are doing. I don’t think any of us wants to just abandon each other. Maybe some way we can possibly get out of this. America is turning crazy right now. The way they was able to capture us, it’s clear that they are not using normal equipment. Somehow they were able to detect that we were mutants. They didn’t go after everybody inside the sports bar, just us.”
[Eddie]: “Which means they knew about the mutant problem before anyone else. So they have to be connected to whoever created it. That’s why they need us alive. We’re the prototypes. We’re the first of a new breed. And judging by that guy who put us in here, I’d say their intent is to weaponize us somehow, either by controlling us or studying us to make a better serum. I’m willing to bet we’re not all here by chance.”
Eddie looks over directly into Everett’s soul, through his eyes. Any question of Eddie’s conduct is temporarily forgotten.
[Eddie]: “We were chosen.”
[Camila]: “I have a strong gut feeling that I know who did this.”
Eddie and Everett both look over at Camila who just spoke. She walks over to them with a serious look mixed with a deep level of emotional thought.
[Camila]: “I think the man who did this is a known figure in the world of science. This mutant injection was created and put together like a recipe, which means the person who did this? They purposely did it to create mutation.”
[Everett]: “Whoever did this, were they trying to change the world for their own personal gain?”
[Camila]: “I don’t know.”
[Everett]: “What makes you think that we have a chance of surviving any of this? Being a mutant isn’t exactly a good thing in the eyes of a normal human being.”
[Camila]: “.....Our safest bet is that there is somebody out there who believes in the fact that we have the right to live just like everyone else. This was against our will, the mutant change that happened. Not all governments are bad, not all people working for this country is cold hearted. There has to be somebody who has been focusing on the change happening in this country and simple wants to help those who are innocent, like us.”
[Eddie]: “I wish I could be that optimistic, but even if there was….they are out there and we are in here. We’re all each other’s got right now. I’m sorry if you think I’m a little too out there, but I don’t plan on hiding who I really am. Give me a chance, I promise I can do something useful.”
[Everett]: "I trust you."
[Everett]: “You know, for a guy who turns blue and can’t keep himself hidden from the world, you sure do have a more positive attitude than I do. I don’t know how you are taking this stuff so chilled out.”
